Speaking Consciously

To speak consciously is to be concerned with the wellbeing of oneself and others. It requires as much from the clarity of mind, as it does the feeling into the heart. Just like yoga, it is a practice that we move into and out of. We move into the asana when our breath is peaceful and expanded; we are both strong, soft and steady. We move out of the asana when our breath becomes strained or restricted; we become tense, weak or lose our balance. We move into speaking consciously when we pause before speaking, and then speak from our truth, but in a way that does not harm or disturb the other. We move out of speaking consciously when we react with automated words that may disturb both our peace of mind and that of our interlocutors. To speak consciously, as in embodying the asana, requires both a centring of self, and a sensitivity to that which is beyond the self. To speak consciously requires us to let go the words we think the other wants to hear, where we are pulled outside our centre and lose our balance and strength. But to speak consciously also requires us to be receptive to the other such that we understand the other’s consciousness as an extension of our own, just like the space that surrounds us, is an extension of our embodiment.
