Stasis, Exstasis, and Enstasis

Stasis is a slowing, a stoppage of flow. Exstasis is a movement out of place. It is etymologically linked to the word existence, understood as constant change and movement. Enstasis is a movement inwards and a stilling of movement, as in meditation. Life involves both movement and stillness. When our life force is blocked, we are stuck – in stasis. When we flow with our life force we experience that exquisite balance between movement and stillness. Yoga, as a movement-meditation, is an exstatic-enstasis.
